Care Guide

Washing and caring for your nappies is simple, yet important. To ensure the longevity and cleanliness of your nappies we recommend the following care guide.

Remove Solids & Dry Pail

Remove any solids from the nappy into the toilet. If soiled, rinse or lightly hand scrub to remove any excess and wring dry.  Nappies that only contain wee, or exclusively breastfed poo, do not need to be rinsed. Store you used nappies in a dry pail (airy basket with holes) to allow air flow and eliminate mould or ammonia build up.

Prewash

Prewash dirty nappies daily or every second day. Wash nappies on 40-60 degrees with adequate detergent as per manufacturers instructions for heavily soiled items. Add a stain remover booster (such as Napisan) if desired. Ensure the cycle length is between 30 – 60 minutes and on the highest spin setting to remove excess wash water. Once cycle is complete, transfer nappies to a ‘prewashed dry pail’ or basket ready for a main wash. Prewashed nappies do not need to be hung to dry if placed in a dry pail and there is adequate airflow.

Main Wash

Main wash all prewashed nappies in one cycle, every three to four days, or once you have a full load – whichever comes first. Include detergent for heavily soiled items and stain remover booster if desired. Set at 40 – 60 degrees and highest spin setting. Ensure your cycle length is at least two hours. The main wash will ensure all excess dirty water from your prewash is removed. Due to the absorbent nature of cloth nappies, the inserts are multi-layered and will naturally hold water. This two-step wash cycle will ensure that your nappies are thoroughly cleaned.

Dry

We recommend line drying in the shade. Inserts can be placed in the sun or tumbled dried on low setting if need be. Hanging the nappy shell in direct sunlight or placing them in the drier can damage the elastics and PUL layer and effect the waterproofing, rendering them ineffective. Avoid using pegs on the elastics of your nappy shell. If possible, eliminate the use of pegs on the nappy shell all together by placing them over the line/rail or using the snaps to loop around the line/rail. This will ensure longevity of the elastics and PUL layer.

DO NOT

  • Use fabric softener
  • Wash above 60 degrees
  • Place nappy shell in direct sunlight
  • Tumble dry nappy shell
  • Soak your nappy shell (inserts do not need regular soaking unless you are treating stubborn stains)
